My World: Trumpeter Swans

I've been trying my hand at a little birding with my new Tamron 150-600mm (not specifically purchased for this purpose). We have trumpeter swans wintering up on the Skagit flats about an hour from my house. Beautiful in flight.

Cloudy winter days made for some good cloud action and translated well to B&W.

Jim,

You're so fortunate to have these birds visiting. How long are they around? Had you tried to take them on previous years?

This is unusual, with the majestic mountains in the b.g. You must be pretty proud of this simple but well executed composition. Did you move following the passing of the birds or was your lens stationary?

I like shots covering this fabulous flock behavior.

The pictures suggest that you might never have used the full telephoto extent of the new lens. I wonder if you have any images of isolated birds that really challenges the glass.

wish I could . . .

Asher, I'd love to get a close-up portrait of these birds, but my patience and neophyte field craft were not up to it in the circumstances. Of course I don't want to approach so close as to spook the flock and send them flying.

Here is one of my better attempts, but far from a good portrait.
