Photo blog sites

I've been limping along with a photo blog on livejournal, largely because I already had an LJ and it was trivial to add another. However, I don't have as much control over the display of my images as I'd like, so I'm looking for alternatives.

I've tried looking at the various photoblogs I like, but, with the exception of Chromasia, I haven't been able to find out what software they use (at least I'm assuming that he uses pixyBlog, given that he says he's sponsored by them). My favorite (both in content and blog layout) is A Walk Through Durham Township, Pennsylvania.

So... can anyone suggest good software/hosting sites that you have used? I run my own server, so I can host images or the whole blog myself if need be (assuming it will run on Linux/Apache). I'm transitioning to working on a Mac instead of Linux, so something that requires Mac software to update it is viable. Requiring Windows software is right out, though.

Simple, easy to customise, and free.

Edit your templates on any platform, and manage the photoblog across the web.

One of my photoblogs using pixelpost (basically their default template with light modifications - and I got rid of the archive functionality, so don't worry if that is important to you, it exists).

No reason why you couldn't replicate the Durham Township look with Pixelpost.

That looks about right. Somehow I'd missed your photoblogs being shown in that format - it's pretty much what I want.

I don't necessarily want to swipe the full look of Durham Township. I just like the general interface and want to support something similar.

The option of running a third party blog software on my own server hadn't occurred to me for some reason. This will be fun to experiment with.

With Kathleen Connally, one just gets lost in the beauty!

She's very talented! Any idea what she has used?

Interesting she only goes to 22" wide prints. She must have an Epson 4800

I expect the market on the internet is not supportive of larger prints.

I would imagine that her pictures would readily hold up to larger size. anyway, she has done a magnificent job.

I've been using folderblog. It's php based and although it's not really being supported by its author, it's still usable and free. It even has captcha to prevent spam commenting.
I'm over at http://randompanderings.com and there's a folderblog link on the top right of the page.

Info about A Walk Through Durham Township

Hi, everyone:

Thanks for the kind words about my site and my photography.

I use Moveable Type software (http://www.sixapart.com) to publish my photoblog.

Six Apart offers a few different products for bloggers, from pre-designed templates to those that can be completely hand-coded. I've found them to be supportive and helpful when I had issues or questions. Overall I've had a happy experience for the last four years.

My site is hand-coded; I designed the layout and hired web designers to handle the difficult coding. (I'd rather be taking pictures.)

Let me know if you have other questions, and thanks again for the nice comments!

All the best,
Kathleen Connally

Hi Kathleen,

You are here!

What a surprise present for us! This is a delight.

We are about documenting, wowing, bringing magic and at times, implementing vision with feeling and thought, making art.

You have empowered yourself in your photography. That energy transmits to your readers and beyond. So naturally we're thrilled! :)

BTW, how did you find your way here from http://www.durhamtownship.comDurham Township?

How I got here...

Hi, Asher ~

Thanks so much!

I found my way here through my analytics software http://www.indextools.com. I receive a listing of referring URLs which tells me how people arrived at my site.

Open Photography Forums showed up on my referrer's list this past weekend, so thought I'd stop by and see what the fuss was. :)

Looking forward to seeing what's going on here; when I have some time after the holidays I plan to peruse a bit.

Happy holidays to everyone!

Kathleen
