Sony Artisan calibration question

I have been using a Sony Artisan monitor for almost 3 years now. Currently under XP professional.

There have not been any issues with this monitor until last night. While attempting to calibrate it, I kept getting an error, " the ambient room light was too bright". This error would come up during the first part of the calibraiton, right after the monitor goes totally black, (briefly powers off, then comes back on).

When mine came back on each time, I would get the error on too much light.

I had the room totally black, so there really was no other light besides that being put out by the monitor.

I finally got a calibration done but only after moving the sypder's USB port a few times.

I did upgrade to the 1.2.5 version of the software but that really didn't seem to help.

Has anyone else seen this? and if so is it a sign that the system is starting to fail. I still have 6 months left on the warranty so would like to get some feedback.

Thanks
Paul Caldwell

Hi Paul,

Sorry you have already has enough aggra from Windows XP!

Where do you live? The fastest way to test is to borrow someone else's Spyder or other coloremeter/spectrophotometer.

Otherwise, I'd assume it was bad and put in a service claim!

This thread is a bit old, but I'll offer this just in case anyone else is using a Sony Artisan and encounters strange behavior from their Sony calibrator. Karl Lang has written a patch for the Sony Artisan calibration software (Karl wrote the original calibration software program for Sony) that is available from his web site. You can find the patch HERE. It's a link right on the main page of his site. I downloaded it and it completely fixed the problem I was having with the puck not be recognized on my Mac. Apparently this is a problem that tends to crop up with Artisan monitors that are several years old.

Cheers!

Paul,

As Andrew strongly implies, the Artisan is a professional imonitor and deserves appropriate quality calibration. The Spyder is a very useful colorimeter which serves well. It's close. But for the Artisan, Eizo and other high end monitors you need the real cigar!

The Eye One spectrophotometer is one such reliable instrument. So is its packaged derivative that comes with the Artisan.

Let us know how the Sony Calibrator is doing. Do you have it still?

Actually the Sony Artisan uses a Colorimeter that was designed with a custom filter for the Artisan Phosphor's. It was built by Sequel Imaging which is owned by GretagMacbeth (which is now owned by X-Rite). Lets say they are cousins <g>
