Today is the U.S. federal holiday "Washington's Birthday". It of course honors the first president of the United States, George Washington.
This holiday is often, but erroneously, called "Presidents['] Day". There have in fact been several proposals to change its name to one of those, but it has never been enacted.
In many of the U.S.states, this day is a state holiday, sometimes called Washington's Birthday, sometimes "Presidents['] Day", sometime by some other related name. For example, Arkansas today, at the state level, celebrates "George Washington's Birthday and Daisy Gatson Bates Day".
In New Mexico, there is no state holiday today, but many state offices, schools, and the like are closed in observance of the federal holiday.
But New Mexico does have a state holiday called "Presidents' Day". It falls on the day after Thanksgiving (always a Friday), and thus gives a good excuse for giving many state employees a four-day weekend.
The 44 presidents we have had (yes, there have been 45 presidencies, Grover Cleveland having been elected president twice, for discontiguous terms) paint an amazing picture of this nation. Each has come to have a certain reputation, often with good and bad versions, usually synchronized with the political party (or tribe, in either the actual or figurative sense) of the "rater".
Our nation, in great part because of the wisdom of the "founding fathers", has survived and prospered through all these presidencies, and I have full faith that it will continue to do so.
Best regards,
Doug
