Visited my friend's flower shop today to shoot the annual advent deco there...

In all, the ability to isolate in art photography looks more important for a lens than ability to include!

Thanks guys!! NIcolas, I'm always been and ever will be the Full Glass type!! Overflow full actually... ;-)

LoL!
But if you keep it full, you won't get any satisfaction with it content…
When it's 1/2 full (or empty) it means you've tasted already but still have more to drink…

Nicolas,

It’s the full glass, with soft focus that delivers the flower in perfect detail and the outside that paints the b.g. with angel’s dust. That’s why classic soft focus lenses still fetch a prince’s ransom.

The lens includes the rose, the bride’s smile or the innocent child but the distractions of the bg are excluded by gentle magic!

Asher,
You might consider the opposite… :
It's the ability of the lens to include sharp focus point within a soft focus area that make the magic!
Technically, it's the ability to transform a piece of glass to deliver a neat and sharp focus area within a soft environment which is a technical achievement!

Just another point of view and no one can say which one is more true than the other…

The lens is, apparently, a Meopta 50mm f/1.0 projection lens, see also here. 6 elements in 6 groups, all spherical. Very small register distance, which allowed for the fast aperture. Made for 16mm film projectors, so frame size of about 10.5mm x 7.5mm.

When designing a film projection lens, the optical engineer does not care about rendering of out of focus areas, since both the projected film area and screen are flat. From the posted pictures, one can actually see that spherical aberration is slightly over-corrected, with out of focus points taking a typical donut shape. On the top pictures, that gives the impression that the back plant is "vibrating".
