I want to share my experience so others may prevent it.
the gear:
microtech firewire CF reader
2 GB Kingston Pro
images taken on Canon 1Ds
Windows XP pro SP2
what happened:
the card was almost full (5 or 6 shots left)
first windows didn't read the card. Reboot. Card reads fine after reboot.
I open a couple of files to see: all raw so ACR writes the settings in the card. This was a HUGE mistake because at the second picture opened the card went crazy. FAT was corrupted. all files appearing with all the possible characters , including the sub-directories (DCIM etc.)
To cut it short I did a recovery with PC Inspector and I was able to get half of the shooting back
Beside the fact that I believe the 1Ds itself do show issues with almost full cards the advice is this:
DO NOT OPEN FILES FROM THE CARD. Copy everything into the hard disk immediately and treat the card like it was read only.
don't repeat my mistake!
