Andy,

So how do you think this pattern was created? Was there, perhaps a floating, semi-submerged clump of seaweed that left its mark? Some of the curvilinear forms seen solid, not gauged out, so could a clump or frondy seaweed be buried below the surface?

Or is this complex pattern the carvings of crabs that wander from and return to their burrows?
