My World: Blank Pages

What could be more conductive to a trip than a blank page ? Sure it can be anxious, meaning lack of inspiration. It can be the starting point of deep reflection, the formalization of impressions, feelings. A pilgrimage in the unconscious. It forces us to question, to move forward, to write a path.
Never been yourself in a full white, empty room ? Scary ? No, on the contrary, a real space of freedom, where everything is to be done, drawn, thinkable. The definition of future to write. We must go forward, because this page can’t remain white, the failure shall be there. But how forward, towards where ? Why ? Here is an interesting exercise. And how a photographer could answer it ? Without pencil, without brush ?
I had to go along with such exercise. With only a body, a lens, and light … and a few sheets of paper ! seemingly nothing more simple, and as I like clean and simple work … But simplicity isn’t so simple ! Especially since I really wanted to do something as such , without drawing or writing on, without darkening them, not to refer to their support function. A sort of hymn of the blank page !
Locked in the studio several days to bend , fold , turn , light , frame … Why ? Playing with sheets of paper ? In a sense, to end with these blank pages, fixed in the likeness, in the purity, virginity. But open to the difference in the feel and imagination. Playing with light, drawing these volumes, these shadows, these forms, these ways. Finally, it would seem that we can do a lot from nothing… And that’s where the interesting things begin …

Nicolas,

The first image, made of side illuminated white paper is devoid of marks, just one edge, one curved edge or fold and one embossed ridge. We've no title, so we must allow the lines and shapes to lead us. The lines fall from upper left.

In the Western language systems, we read from left to right, an here we'd descend, perhaps. but the image does not give any feeling of negativity. Rather the right-hand line suggests the opening of a curtain to allow passage, perhaps. So might it serve as a portal for passing through or for showing things or oneself? I do like this project for it's simplicity and chutzpah.

Asher

BTW, an embossed ridge is for formal notes and to me, at least, intrudes on lyricism. However, as I learn more in this series, it may prove itself masterful. Right now it seems foreign.

These are all an exercise in composition of light and shade.
I am not too keen on the more central compositions
BUT...
#5 FTW !
Simple, elegance, subtle and perhaps sensual. NAILED IT!

Simplement parfait, Nicolas!

Thanks all for the kinds words.

Asher, seems you got it. Indeed I'm not fond of always follow this western reading, specially here where it ad something. The reading is hidden but there, the important part is what is not shown, but in your mind.
