One of the most important venerated sea temples in Bali. Reportedly the first Hindu temple associated with the Majapahit priest, Nirartha. It is located in the West of Bali along the south-west coast.

It is an obligatory visit, especially at sunset. Most of the photos in travel magazines feature this temple at sunset. It is also the time when the crowds are almost impassable.

So I visited this temple just before noon. No crowds. But the lighting was atrocious. My apologies.

Then around noon is indeed the best time... or maybe dawn too. This is wonderful. It's almost as if some imagineering team at disney had sketched this and then built the entire setup for some theme park. But it's not that and it's real and that's the beauty of it.

Asher, you are quite on the mark with the ' Disney ' thought. I am told that a substantial portion
of the rock had to be reinforced, and the path leading upto the Temple recast.

I guess it is better to preserve with as much accuracy as possible than let it decay.

This is really neat Fahim. It takes more than a quick glance to take in all the features. A person might get washed out to sea trying to get to the temple.

It is also an incredibly photogenic location, and your vantage point was well chosen. The lone wanderer is perfectly placed to give a sense of dimension, and he's leading us (left to right readers) back into the image.

Ron, first my thanks for stopping by at this post.

I am told, the inside of the Temple ( non-Balinese are not allowed inside ) contains beautiful engravings.

My position, and subsequent cropping, has done away with a ' safer ' route into the Temple. It does have
iron railings, but no non-slip flooring!

The small white speck on the rock bridge behind the Temple on your left is in fact a human figure.

My immediate thoughts on seeing the Temple were of the consequences of a Tsunami.

Bart, I do regret not being there at dawn or sunset. But it would have been fruitless, as it is impassable..with pilgrims. Else one could use a tele, which I did not have.

But yes, an impressive sight it would be given the right light!! As it is, I was fascinated even at noon.
