We only had a limited time to spend but I fell in love with the place instantly. I was expecting a lot more damage remaining from Katrina but New Orleans seems to have made a great recovery. I'm sure there are still areas and people who suffer from the destruction, though.

It certainly was a very special trip. We love going to places that are very different from our usual surroundings and Southern USA certainly qualifies in this respect! It's only a month now but it feels like forever! Our visit left us really hungry for more.

Fascinating and hopeful for Cajun music. I wonder if they have recorded any of their work. How much was in the Cajun French? Interesting to see how the traditional melodies and nuances of language have survived to this new generation. Today, the different French of the Creole communities is mixing at the edges with the different Cajun vocal and traditions, but the music is still separate.
I found this helpful site where differences between their to communities and origins are explained.

Thanks for the link, fascinating indeed. Lousiana had a very nice atmosphere, mostly owing to the huge cultural and national mix. We only stopped for a few days but I got the impression that both Cajun and Creole were doing well. I hate to see powerful cultures dissolving smaller and maybe less potent cultures into one big mass. To me this little and most symphatetic festival was a testimony of this not happening in Lousiana. I might be wrong but I certainly hope I'm right! The bands we saw performed in English, there might have been French music later in the evening but it was already the pool time for the kids then, lol! (we had to bribe them into tolerating the heat with pounds of shaved ice and promises of spending the evenings in water)
