Speaking of images & the debate...

Our TV is an old Sony XBR Trinitron, and we stopped paying the cable bill a couple of years ago. We use it only to watch movies. So we were happy to be invited to the neighbors' down the block to watch last night's debate on their 46" Samsung HDTV.

Ouch! A big HD screen is very unforgiving of makeup and skin textures, isn't it? I think I like my old CRT better. This is too much information. (I've heard it's causing real problems in the porn industry...)

Hi Nill,

I have been noticing the same thing but discovered that for the expensive personalities they use soft blur sparkly filters. I'll see if I can find them!

Are you talking about the "Barbara Walters' filter"? There's an article talking about this topic over on TV Predictions http://www.tvpredictions.com/vainhd040707.htm

Maybe instead of Botox and soft focus, we need to start enjoying faces with character. I've always found the botoxed people a little creepy and people who have had cosmetic surgery really don't age well at all. To me they tend to look like melting wax figures. Bits start to slide around and end up in odd places.

Beyond Filters

What they really need is what Hollywood* has done for years, using huge soft light sources to minimize the visibility of pores and wrinkles. But the networks may need to build larger studios to accommodate such large filters which would entail major capitol expenses on top of the outlay for HD gear. You do not need soft focus when the light is not emphasizing the flaws we all have. Add in heavy usage of makeup applied by skilled professionals and HD is not that big of a hurdle.

some thoughts,

Sean
