After the Storms

Hi All - took this later afternoon after a couple days of snow and rain. Standing in my driveway taking in the beauty of Mother Nature and realized that I had better go grab the camera.

This has a delightful painterly appearance, it is great to be able to capture that short time after a storm when the air is clean and the light is moved to play magic with the scene. This is taken at what time of day?

Thanks Asher, it was taken between 3 and 4 PM. Looking West. I was really wanting to capture the effect of the misting in the hills and the contrast to the foreground. I love clouds and was standing there watching this scene build and my wife nudged me back to awareness to get the camera.

Marshall,

I presume this is digital but how did you have to process it to bring out the painterly feeling?

This is a combination of two images, one exposed for the clouds and the other the foreground. I adjusted the exposure slider in PS and layered one on top of the other. I then added a mask and brushed away the areas to reveal the corrected exposures. The effect that I received through sliding the exposure control in PS was really rewarding in these images. I then played with the levels slider to maximize specific areas for highlighting. The natural wet landscape did a lot of the coloring for me, I just played with the exposure, mask and brush to bring them out.

I wondered about these possible ways of achieving your result. Have you read this thread? It's on Bart and then Cem's have findings on a great new software program. I think it might be helpful for this type of work. How much did your EV vary between shots?

Yeah, I agree with Asher, this is such a beautiful and painterly scene. I like the sense of scale the home and pylons lend the image, also.

Thank you Paul, that is certainly one of the attractions to the shot that I saw in my mind. Having lived in the city for my whole life, I am fascinated how the natural dirt and rock can create such color with minor weather change.

Asher, the referenced site is something I will look at closely. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hi Marshall,
Apologies for the late compliments - well done!
Now I'll be so bold as to a request...
Would you consider posting a larger image?
There's so much detail to be consumed, especially the mist covered hills in the background.
I'd really love to take all this in!

Marshall, I was going to ask before and yes, it would be wonderful to have a large image. Add your © to the IPTC code and on the bottom of the picture.

Hi Marshall,

Would you consider posting a larger image?

Hi John,
Thanks for the kind thoughts. On my original post is a link to a larger image. do you want one larger than that? Can do if needed.

Asher - as I am still learning the code stuff, can you please explain what you are telling me.

Thank you -- Marshall

I've moved the comments on protecting one's pictures to a new thread here. Likely that will end up being merged with previous threads on the same topic.

Back to beauty! Looking for more like this!

I keep returning to enjoy this photograph. It has so much beauty in the clouds, the layering and the landscape, even that horizontal black road decorated by the patterns snow tires have drawn in the snowfall. It's pictures like this which are so satisfying, that make effort in supporting an open forum so worthwhile to me personally and I'm sure for the other moderators and members of OPF alike. I know you must be proud of this one. So now look for others in your collection that might stand by this and continue the experience into a series, even a small one.

What a nice way to start one's day! Thank you so much for the input Asher, that is very nice of you. I will look through the collection and see what I can find. There is a wooded area that I want to get to at the right time of the day to capture some shots, hopefully one of them will be in line with this work. Your words have made me smile even larger than normal, thanks.
