1DM3 aI servo fix reported

For those that don't visit other sites very often, DPR has reported and reliable folks POTN confirmed that Canon aparently has identified the problem with the 1DM3 AI servo focus problems and there is a hardware fix in the works. Apparently you will need to call in to Canon service to get in line for the fix.

All I know is this means I won't have to worry about it with my 1DsMkIII whenever it comes in as all new 1-series cameras coming out of the factory supposedly are now fixed.

Just sharing some news,

This is so delightful! About time that Canon solved this problem! After all, they have had photographers testing it for over a year! However, I suspect that they are changing components all the time and each photographer likely gets a newer version.

Anyway, the 1DIII is such an important and eagerly waited camera. It's not yet perfect in it's desgin for sure, but dealing with the focus issue with the 1DIII is going to be a major reason for the 1DsIII to be trusted out of the gate!

I almost gave up with the 1DIII i've had for the last week. A colleague thrust his copy on me following a nightmare of a weekend spent shooting birds in flight and not getting sharp images. I spent the last few days photographing test charts and squirrels and came to the conclsuion that was indeed something fundamentally wrong with the dSLR, so this will be music to ears (and eyes)!!!

I've been following this (as a 1d3 owner) ever since the news broke on Galbraith. AFIK, it's an issue with predictive focus in AI Servo mode, likely exacerbated by higher temperatures. Depending on how fast your squirrels or test charts were moving, you might not see much of an improvement. :)

Tim,

If the truth be known, I think his 1DIII has something additionally wrong with it, as both of us have experienced frequent focus lockups.

BTW, these were supercharged "US import" grey squirrels, unlike our laid-back british reds :)

While this has nothing to do with the camera its funny that the squirrel situation is just the opposite here. The reds at about half the size of the grays will tackle the big grays and kick their a$$ everytime. They will chase them from tree to tree to drive them off.

The report said:

"Internet reports of MIIIs losing focus while in One-Shot AF with the central sensor on the subject are obviously fueled by internet hysteria (or the photographer’s index finger slipping off the shutter button without their realizing it…)"

LOL!!!
