400D Canon cuts price by 30%

My gut reaction

This will make some happy and some sad.

Have you had £150/$300 of use from your 400D yet ?

... is more on a happy side .

As an entry level dslr body, neither 3xx, nor 4xx series were supposed to be "residual keepers".

I do understand the feeling of those who just paid the full price a few weeks ago.
But - that's life. We all know the name of the game: "hurry and pay, wait and save".

In any case - it drives the prices down and make C/N competition more fierce, which is always good for us customers :)

Thanks for the news!

This Sid is sad for new users. I feel bad for them

I seem to trigger the next new wonder processor platform in Macs!!

I carefully choose a new Mac Tower loaded with everything! For sure 3 weeks later, that "best" model is now discounted and there's a new flagship.

As long as time continues, things change, that's the nature of things. The only solution is to buy what does the job for you now!

OTOH, I love Nikon having a resurgence. Sony, Kodak, Pentax, Olympus, Leica, Panasonic and more as well!

This pulls top players back into the jungles where the rest of us have to live. They too then have to look over their shoulder. I only wish the best technology at the lowest prices for all the camera companies. However, that will also force survival battles. This will jeapardise our choices once again.

The wisest MFRS will join forces to have a larger profile and be more competitive. I'm hoping for example that the Hy6 with really come about and succeed.

This stuff always runs in cycles, I guess someone always suffers.
It will be interesting to see how far up the range Canon and Nikon will go with the price cuts.

If I buy something, I use it, that way I get value for my money - even if the product gets discounted.

At the new price there are very few reasons not to buy a 400D, a fine piece of kit IMHO.

But, Sid, always with a better lens!

A >or= f2.8 give one a fine camera with accurate center. Dont focus and recompose. Use a wider field of needed and crop later!

I'm thinking a nice kit would be the 24-70 2.8L or the 351.4L

I don't know...

I'll wait, I think... I'll miss the thumbwheel..
My next target is getting used 20D or 30D as a second body.. hopefully I'll get the funds by March <dunno>

Hello Folks:

As an FYI, the web page mentioned by the OP has been corrected:

http://www.cameratown.com/news/news.cfm/hurl/id|3357

Canon USA has not changed the price of the EOS Digital Rebel XTi. The estimated selling prices remain at $799 for the body only kit and $899 for the zoom lens kit with the EF-S18-55mm lens.

We did drop the price of the EOS Digital Rebel XT by $100. The estimated selling prices for the XT are now $599 for the body only kit and $699 for zoom lens kit with the EF-S18-55mm lens.

I was feeling bad about this until I got to the end :). I bought a 400D to replace my backup 350D. My 20D is still going strong, but it's nice to have 10MP for landscapes. I think the noise in the 20D is still better at high ISOs.

The XTi takes great pictures in good light, but its no match for the 20D in low light. With the same manual f-stop and shutter speed, and both set to ISO 1600, the 20D has 1.1 stops higher signal-to-noise in the deepest shadows.

Thanks for the info' Chuck.
It was not my intent to misrepresent the pricing, maybe I should wait a bit longer when I report a link.

Anyway, the 400D is still a fine camera. Since I bought mine, it has already paid for itself (even at UK prices).
