“Michaeli said it is believed that the cranes were infected by smaller birds that had contact with farms suffering from outbreaks. Israeli media carried photos of workers in white hazmat suits collecting crane carcasses after the birds were first found to be sick about 10 days ago. Michaeli said the death toll among cranes appears to have stabilized in recent days.

“This is a good sign,” he said. “They might be starting to get over this. We hope very much.”

This is a huge shock to Israel as it’s the worst ecological disaster ever.

It does show how H1N1 flu can devastate wildlife. It will result in massive shortages of poultry as farms have had to sacrifice their flocks. Obviously small wild birds can’t be readily separated from chicken production if the chickens are raised free on land!

Its a huge wake up call as to the risks of massive-scale single-species farming becomes a potential biological virus pathogen factory for both migratory birds, as well as susceptible humans!

It seems that just a gossamer thin wall of sheer luck separates us from the next new pandemic!
