Yesterday our granddaughter Tiffany was married to Michael, a member of the US Marine Corps, in the courtroom of a Tarrant County Justice of the Peace. For those outside the US who might no be familiar with the office, a Justice of the Peace is a magistrate, usually at the county level, with jurisdiction over various legal matters (varies by state) but most often thought of as being empowered to perform marriages.
Michael is stationed at on leave between the completion of his basic training at the Recruit Depot in San Diego and reporting to Camp Pendleton (just north of San Diego) to begin his specialized training in aircraft electronics.
I had kidded Tiffany about that, saying, "Now who is marrying you, the Tarrant County Dogcatcher?"
Here we see Tiffany's father, Carla's older son Russ, at the handoff:
Douglas A. Kerr: The handoff
As you can see, the presiding official was neither the dogcatcher nor any way a dog.
Now for the ring:
Douglas A. Kerr: With this ring, I thee wed
Shortly after, it was a done deal:
Douglas A. Kerr: I now pronounce . . .
And of course, there was the paperwork:
Douglas A. Kerr: Signed and sealed
The final proclamation: "This is a legal contract, and as with any contract, there is fine print, in this case on the back. Here it says that of your firstborn is a girl, she must be named Jacquelyn, after the presiding Justice of the Peace."
It was a lovely proceeding, and Jacquelyn provided much wisdom and good humor in its course.
We are very proud of the couple.
They then rushed off to the nearest Navel Station to record Michael's new status and to prepare to apply for family housing at Camp Pendleton.
Best regards,
Doug
