Agents / End of the 'World

Good morning, (in the UK at least!)

I've just completed my first foray into street photography & would like your opinions on my results. Also, as this is quite a historic day over here (end of the news of the world paper after 168 years) This morning (early!) I shot a series of portraits of newsagents with their last copies of the paper. I would love to know what you think of these also.

I was quite nervous when I started shooting in the street yeasterday, but it was good fun & I think I'm gaining confidence!

http://bit.ly/bdgblog (<- the photos are a bit big, I don't want to create a huge post, so there are more photos on the blog, thanks.)

We have been following the news about the News of the World here in the continent as well. I think it is very clever of you to do this shoot, excellent! I like the collection on your blog not only due to the news worthiness but also because it gives a quite good impression about the multi cultural fabric of the UK. Thanks for sharing.

Street shooting can be a lot of fun but it can also cause a lot of stress. If you are faced with the latter, just let it go. After all, we do not have to get every picture opportunity we see. Just relax and wait till another opportunity knocks. That is what I try to remember. :)

Ben,

Your pictures cover 3 of 4 broad categories of street photography taken:

  1. With some consent, maybe a nod and a smile

  2. Surreptitiously when they cannot possibly notice

  3. Surreptitiously when they might notice

  4. Brazenly even though they notice
The news of the World last edition seller is taken with obvious consent. She like it! That's category #1 covered and has no tension and a lot of reward. The second picture, of the man on the bench surrounded by an overwhelming sea of cobblestones, is likely done with no consent, but we don't know and it does not matter, perhaps.

These types of images are rewarding, satisfying and safe. By contrast, venturing stealth or even brazen pictures of folk who might not agree or give consent, sets up tension. If one avoids that, then those types of street photography cannot be done and one is limited.

How far are you prepared to go?

Is what you need already satisfied with just going for consent or from where you cannot be seen?

Asher
