Both taken at our local zoo. The bears name was Debby and was a famous orphaned Polar bear. She entered the Guinness world book of records as the oldest living Polar bear. They figured about 18 million people visited her in the 4 decades she spent a the zoo. She passed away in 2008 - a real blow to the city.
There is a story behind this shot. This image was taken a few years before she passed away. She was actually batting flies from her nose. I kept taking shots for the right one and had to clone out the flies. After she passed the local main newspaper wanted an image of her. The paper explained that they had thousands of shots of her but wanted one with people, preferably a family in the foreground. I submitted this one and they chose it. It wound up as was an 8 by 10 on the third page. I was able to check that off my photographic bucket list.
