Gate Keepers they are, their mission to scare away bad spirits.... Bali is the only hindu-buddhist influenced area in whole Indonesia. Ancient Sanskrit texts go probably back as early as 1000 BCE.

So,

Now I can see from your pictures, Georg, that there are at least two of them. Are they at the same location? Fahim and Georg, is there an entire view in your collections?

Apologies Mohammed, I did not mean to hijack your thread.

Asher, they are in different locations. The two I showed here went on a very long journey when a gentleman with more money than sense saw fit to take them away from their original location and bring them to Ireland to 'grace' his pleasure castle with and impress international weekend visitors who were always keen to be seen in his presence, on their hunting trips, killing deer for fun.

So, they are near you? Could you post the entire sculpture. Is it rock or cement and how old do you think it might be. On another note, is this an example of the ugly tourist? Seems somehow bad manners to collect other peoples scared art to pimp out one's hunting castle!

I am at KL airport. Arguably the best aiport in the world. Waiting for my flight to Bahrain, and then home.

I shall post full captures of the Temple entrances once I am settled at home, Inshallah.

Ayesha is back with lots of photographs at the summit! She wants to compare her captures with mine. Hers must be better.

I shall post some of those too.

Regards.

Hi Fahim,

Looking forwards to both of your image sets, as usual. Have a save flight back.

Cheers,
Bart

The statues are made of stone and stand on a platform.

As for ugly tourist, bad manners and all, well ;) I am afraid this was a very american art thing, his father was the curator of the Philadelphia Art Museum, and his son, the originator of the pimp up my pleasure castle idea is more than likely to be found in your kitchen, in a small bottle with a red fluid called tabasco. My first exhibition of large format 60x40 inch framed prints on Irish soil were on display in his castle.

Not only Bali Statues, but Italian marble as well, but please do not ask me now what I really think of such trophy displays! I was and always shall remain deeply skeptical on the exhibited altruism of the super rich, their taste, motives and ethic is not for me to judge, this is usually falsified by history books.

Kitsch and art, art and commerce, collectors and altruism.... sigh....if you mix that you might end up with green tabasco.

May be the schizophrenic surrounding has a strange influence on people going there, as can be seen here happening to my atheist friend Kevin from Montana.... NOT! He was just putting his long hair back when I caught him in the act. Every since he got his name, Kevin bin Stockdale. ;)
