I used auto-focus and a cheap remote trigger. Also I've noticed that you can see the focus points through the lens, so I would try to position myself so I could actually see the top focus point. Sometimes it would hunt for focus but once I could see the focus point through the lens it would lock on and fire!
I agree with Ben, a higher angle for a Rembrandt style or, given the strong personality expressed in this photo, perhaps lower to the side for a split lighting.
It is a fine portrait anyway, I like it!
