Back ordered Canon 100-400mm

How typical! I've finally decided to go with a 100-400 for my upcoming safari, and now it is back ordered everywhere. I've been keeping an eye on this lens for the last couple of years and it's always been in stock (at B&H anyway). But the last month its out of stock.

Anybody know why this is? Has production stopped or something?

There's one at the local dealer, but he's 50% more expensive than B&H.

KEH has 3 of them

Hi,
Just saw your post. This is a great lens - but be warned that the push pull zoom of the lens can cause more dust to get into your camera and on the sensor. That being said, its one of Canon's better lenses - very sharp and the IS works very well. You can also add the 2x on to this lens and it will work very well.

KEH has several of these new and used. I have no connection to them but have bought from them before with no problems.

Eric, yeah I know. I've read everything about this lens for the past couple of years. Believe me, if somebody wrote something, I've read it :) It is not a lens I would buy if I was not going on safari. It can't match my 70-200 2.8 in quality, it is and old design with the 1st (?) generation IS, and I rarely need anything more than 200. Nikon has a fantastic 200-400, Tamron has a 200-500 (but quality is so-so and no IS), why can't Canon come up with something similar? Or at least update the 100-400 with a new design? I've been holding out forever for a replacement or alternative to this lens. There is simply nothing else out there that is appropriate. Of course, now that I buy it, Canon will announce a new version or something...

Will, thanks! I guess all it took was for me to post this thread. I actually checked both B&H and Adorama before posting it, hehe.

That was actually my first thought about them being out of stock - they might have run out of existing inventory before the replacement was ready for announcement.

They added IS to the 70-200 f4, now I just want it for the 400 f5.6 and maybe an updated 100-400.

Even if they do update it, the existing 100-400 is a pretty good lens. I've got one that's been in to the shop twice, though that's not typical. Optically it can't match things like the 70-200, but you can't beat it for versatility, and it gives some serious reach on a 1.6x sensor. I haven't noticed the dust complaints that others seem to have, but I also run it at 400mm most of the time when I'm using it, so I'm not zooming a lot.
