Birds in Flight on a Budget

Hi there

As a change from from usual shots of Barn Owls and other birds of prey shot at the Hawk Conservancy on Digital SLR with long lenses, I thought i would post this shot taken on a fishing trip that i went on yesterday afternoon.

Just had my Nikon Coolpix 4600 compact camera and fired of a few shots to see what the camera would do. Well i was pleasantly surprised and post this shot below.

Just goes to show why use £5000 worth of equipment when £120 will do. :)

Excellent shot, esepcially with a 'point-and-shoot.' I'm pleasantly surprised that it handled the dynamic range and highlights as well as it did. I am curious, though - what are those hatch-mark like lines apparent against the dark cloud background?

It's amazing how much digital photography has progressed. My first digicam was the Nikon Coolpix 900s, purchased around November, 1998. It was a 1.2 megapixel camera, with fairly poor image quality, that I paid around $1,000 for back then! You can buy a camera for your kids, with probably better resolution and image quality, for under $100 now!

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Don

The hatch marks are water spray coming from the bow of the boat, I was tucked under the cabin roof but we were motoring for home and there was a lot of spray being kicked up so I am pretty sure that is what it is.

The seagulls were following the boat waiting for scraps of fish or bait to be thrown overboard so relative speed was fairly low, but i was also pleasantly surprised by the cameras ability.

You can also put it in your pocket....... unlike the 1D with a 500mm on it :)
