On October 8th, this year's 'Day of the Heroic Revolutionary' in Cuba, crowds numbering in the tens of thousands celebrated the 40th anniversary of the last battle fought by Che Guevara. Among his accomplishments, Che was an active photographer from his teenage years, with pictures from his South American voyage of discovery, made famous in The Motorcycle Diaries, sold to newspapers at that time. What some knowledgeable people describe as the most famous photograph in the world was taken of Che by Alberto Korda in Havana, in 1960, with a Leica and 90mm lens. Although an Italian company sold two million posters from that picture in the months after Che's death, Korda did not benefit financially. Che himself was described as a Leica fan, although there are photographs of him holding a Nikon S2. Whatever Che's legacy to the causes he espoused, Che lives on in the history of photography. Viva Che!
