Church statues

Looking back on the various pictures I have taken in churches, I have noticed a certain trend emerging; namely a distinct preference for photographing the statues. So I think that I might turn this into an ongoing project. For now, here is an initial set of statue pictures from churches in Spain and France.

I could continue but this should give you a good idea about the set. Obviously, not everything gells together just yet. If I would turn this into a project, I will curate and take more/missing pictures with the project goal in mind. Feel free to C&C as usual.

These are all great. People love this kind of thing and I bet you could successfully market it to any churches that support art exhibits as well as galleries.

On #5 were it mine, I’d try a messing with the stained glass a bit to bring out some of the more subtle colors.

Your #3 is my fav of the group, and that’s because I like the diffused light.

Thanks for your comments Tracy, really appreciated. I would normally do bracketing for tone mapping but I did not do that for #5. I can salvage it partially but did not bother so far. Perhaps later.

Re. #3, we are in agreement.

Hi Cem,

Very good collection, my favs are 7 and 8 in terms of lighting and composition. I can't help relating this set to Paul's statues series, interesting to analyze the different approaches to the subject.

Regards,

Ruben

Thanks Ruben. The difference with Paul's series is quite large imo. Paul has already got a vision of what he wants to achieve and how. in my case, I am just formulating my thoughts right now. that is why this is a set but not yet a series.

You have won an invitation to Munich, Bavaria, home of the baroque churches and their many statues. The Asamkirche alone should keep you busy for a while. And I know a few statues which are not usually seen by tourists-

(This is not a joke. I really wonder what you would do in Munich, and I have a guest room.)

I am honored Jerome, thank you very much. I am going to accept this generous offer of yours. Already looking forward to meeting with you! But you are equally welcome to come visit the lowlands of course, we too have a guest room.:)

Sure Cem, I understand that. What I find interesting to point out is the richness of creative expressions that can be achieved with a subject much overlooked by photographers, I think.

Ironically, I have overlooked this post of yours. You are right of course. Thanks.

Cem,

Is the blue tone of the stone real or the lighting?

Nothing matches Joan of Arc! What an incredible woman. There have been similar woman fighters in history. One from the U.K. rebelled against the Romans and did well for a while then the Romans really good miffed and the Romans just managed to massacre her army.

Who else has been so heroic?

Asher
