Doing Critiques

Offering a helpful, well-thought-out critique is as much as skill as capturing a great image.

I've been working quite hard at the image-capturing part and I've made a great deal of progress. I've a long way to go (and in fact am in the first day of a 5 day workshop on portraiture as of...oh about 5 hours ago), but I'm pleased with my own progress. Now, I'm ready to learn by offering critique. Please note -- I realize I know far less that the vast majority here. I'm hoping that I can learn by analyzing. So, if my critique is totally off-base, tell me! But one request -- tell me why as well.

I will make some silly comments, I'm sure. But everything I say will be offered in the spirit of trying to improve the process of image making: the critiquee's possibly, but mine most definitely.

So, I'm jumping in. I ask for patience along with an understanding that I'm learning. So......

Hi Rachel,

Go for it! You feedback will be appreciated for sure.

  1. First the good.

  2. Then your reaction and feelings, thoughts and ideas form the work.

  3. After that if you can recognize technical issues in photography or processing do that
    .
  4. If you feel you can, relate this to other art whether photography, poetry or any other form of creative expression!

  5. Finally, in very exceptional cases, what is the relevance and significance of this work to us?

Who else is willing to sign on to this?

My outline is my suggestion. Others can do likewise or no doubt far better.

What we do need is to open up the floor, so if you can do as Rachel is doing, let us know! The more you take the initiative, the better the forum. Otherwise critique is not broad based in origin and frame of reference and that is essential.
