Dressup Party

My wife and I were invited to a costume party where our son was playing with his band for part of the night. I decided to take my gear and grab shots of each of the couples and individuals there in their attire. I however didn't want it to be a portrait session and so I encouraged them to display their personalities. Also I brought along a lightstand for my flash unit so that some harsh directional light would come in from an angle for interests sake.

Unfortunately there weren't any clear backgrounds in the relatively small backyard that was packed with people. In fact the only place that I could shoot was along a patch of garden in front of the tent where the band would be playing. It was backlit - so that was good. I used a wide angle lens in order to get an angle of view that was needed, as well as for my cameras flash to be in sight of the lightstand mounted flash unit for triggering in the bright sunlight. Here are a selection.

This shot gives a bit of a sense of what things were like. I have my back up against the neighbours fence. There were probably 150 adults all dressed up - socializing, listening to the music, and later playing a few team games. Like this event where groups of 3 people were assigned numbers and worked as a team. The first person would have to lasso the horse and then ride it to the other end of the property, where the next person would be waiting to throw a ball in an attempt to knock a tin can off of a stand and when that was done the third person jumped into a grain sack and hopped his/her way to the finish line.

Robert, a costume party it was. And a good must have been had by all.

I particularly like the solo/couple shots as they more than the other excellent ones capture for me the
personalities and the ' soul ' of the party.

Thank you for sharing and kindest regards.
