I finally, at th' insistence of my Bride, made th' jump to digital photography. I bought a Nikon D-80 an', given th' little I've been able t' use it so far, I jus' flat LOVE th' thing. I'm still in th' beginning stages of learning about th' software involved, tho'. I've got "Gimp", a cheap-o version of an Adobe PS that came w/ th' cam'ra an' somethin' called Picture Project and another called Picasa. Gimp's too complex an' Picture Project doesn't do all I want done, tho' it's a fair start. What's a good, an' cheap, photo processing program?
I'm NOT new t' shootin', jus' new t' th' programs involved. I'd be real grateful f' any steerin' in th' right direction.

I've been toying with the idea of using Photoshop Elements with ACR ? Does the ACR plug-in work with the latest version of Elements?

I chose Bibble - I think it offers quite a bit for $70. Many people like Capture One as well for about the same price.

good move. Getting in at this stage at least you have an opportuntiy to take advantage of the format when it has gone through the beginning stages. It is now cheaper & better. When I worked at CAnon I remember the first 2 digital bodies (based on a Kodak setup) were $35K & 50K AUSD. LAter of course the D30 was only 6K. Compare that to the current situation.
Ahead you have a huge learning curve, major frustration etc but with perserverance & comittment you can also look forward to some fabulous images.............(conditions apply) Naturally you will need to become a bit of a Photoshop semi expert. Don't worry though, as you immerse yourself in the technology it will all gradually unfold for you.

My 6 new pairs of shoes (big sale at my favorite shoe store!)are sitting right next to my camera bag. :) No room in the closet to put them away until I clean out some old ones.

My husband is in real trouble. He only has one lens and one body - 20D with 24-70 on it and a few pair of shoes. Even only one camera bag. But a girl always needs just the right accessories - and this one needs gear to boot!~

Um, not quite right....

Ray, it works more like this..he can borrow MY gear..and he doesn't want to. HE is so happy with the 24-70 on the 20d that he really doesn''t use any of my kit - and I try to encourge him to. He mostly is into the travel and landscape (I will probaby surprise him with a 70-200 for his birthday)As for my shoes, well, they won't quite fit.. but ti could be an interesting image..sorry for the thread hijack...

I just did the HELP (I have Elements 4.0) and it has it's own RAW in it. I dumped Elements because of Bridge being better on CS2 then what Elements uses for the Browser. To me it was worth it. I move my files in Windows Explorer and was constantly crashing.

I shoot RAW and only RAW.
I post process the images with various software but lately just Adobe Lightroom.
I find it a mature product for being v1.0
For the kind of processing I do on the images, Lightroom is all I need. Exposure control, color adjustments, B/W conversion, sharpening, cropping, proofs, galleries and slideshow and some asset management all in one program.

Thanks to all of you who replied t' my question. W/some guy sharin' his wife's shoes, tho', I have t' wonder jus' what it is I've joined! :) I do appreciate th' directions you've provided t'wards th' software. 'Been playin' around with a few things I downloaded. Will weed them out an' take y'all's suggestions out shoppin' when I go.
