Hey Karl.
I think you are off to a good start. The close-ups although a bit grainy, do show off her warm personality. I also really like the photos on the faded red painted wood as the light on her is nice, and the shadows are soft and flattering. I do think if you are able to get a light stand, get that flash off the camera. Although many photographers use many lights, even if you use your just one light but to the side instead of straight on will make a huge difference.
Although the top photo could be over the shoulder pretty, I think the composition here doesn't really work. The wood is chopping her right through the neck. Try not to always put your model in the middle.
