Karl,

To post images, you need to get the URL of the image and that ends in .jpg to work. Read the instructions from your hosting service. Ask specific questions here if you are still stuck. One way is to drag an image to a new browser page or to get that URL in the top of the page.

Karl,

I like these for getting to know a little more of your model! These expressions are very welcome. It's good that you are looking at her humanity and that she reaches out. How did you meet?

Asher

She is the daughter of a coworker. She has done some professional modeling. Her name is Brandy Raye. Thank you for that comment. I am trying to learn the craft and need to know what to look for.

Presumably you're using lights on location. what's your system? Will Thompson is a master at mobile illumination. Also look at Frank Doorhof's work here with Elinchrom. He can turn a day to nighty! Myself I use old fashioned Lumedynes but mounted on a jet fighter battery.

I just have a cheap flash on-camera (DSLR300). No other lighting (no electricity at the barn). I don't have a system yet. These were taken at sunset mostly with available lighting and that flash. We lost the sun pretty quickly so I didn't get to take as many as I would have liked. I will look at those you mentioned. Thank you.

Hey Karl.

I think you are off to a good start. The close-ups although a bit grainy, do show off her warm personality. I also really like the photos on the faded red painted wood as the light on her is nice, and the shadows are soft and flattering. I do think if you are able to get a light stand, get that flash off the camera. Although many photographers use many lights, even if you use your just one light but to the side instead of straight on will make a huge difference.
Although the top photo could be over the shoulder pretty, I think the composition here doesn't really work. The wood is chopping her right through the neck. Try not to always put your model in the middle.

Well done for your first time, keep it up.
Maggie

Hi Karl,

Welcome at OPF.

When you position your model a bit further in front of the background, the background will become more blurry and not attract too much attention. When you do want the background to play a role, then try shooting it at an angle in such a way that it adds something dynamic to the whole setup. In general I'd be careful in letting the background play too much of a dominating role though. Afterall it's about the model, isn't it?

Cheers,
Bart

Karl, a very warm welcome to OPF.

Thank you for posting your first shots for us ( at OPF ) to comment. That is brave of you; but the folk here are very helpful..if seemingly stingy at times. But good at heart.

How would you like us to get to know Brandy?

In my humble opinion, answer that for yourself and you can only go higher in your craft.
Technique can be mastered fairly easily. To convey to others, what you want them to see and feel..that
is a lifetime's pleasurable ( and hopefully for you ) shall be a profitable pursuit.

My best regards to Brandy, her father and yourself.

p.s Please tell Brandy that she is a stunner. No need to pose.
And go easy on the iso settings.

Hi Karl, greetings form sunny and warm Finland (that was a joke). Welcome to OPF (no joke)! I agree with what has been said before. She is absolutely stunning and really seems to comfortable in front of the camera. You also have a good contact with her and that really shows in the pictures. I would, however, suggest you follow Maggie's and Fahim's advice in particular. Work out a way to use an off-camera flash. And maybe even use an umbrella or a softbox. You can get them pretty cheap but they will have a dramatic effect in lighting. And be careful with the iso, in this case the grain doesn't work. Looking forward to seeing more of work here at the OPF. Take care!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and the comments. I appreciate your experience and hope to learn from it. All very encouraging. I will try to employ the techniques you all have suggested. Thanks again!
