My World: Grandma's Birthday Girl

Another document of life's progression in my family. We traveled North last week to visit my mother, aged 86, on the kids' Autumn leave.

Mother lives alone in a small flat. She still manages to live on her own despite her long age. A veteran of war and a child of a completely different world from mine, she doesn't need much materially. And she doesn't seem to suffer from the lack of company, either.

It's a long drive to Rovaniemi from where we live. So we usually can visit her only during longer holidays or leaves. Needless to say I feel bad for not being able to visit her more often.

This year our Autumn visit happened during Laura's 5th birthday.

I just love this photo, Jarmo.

There is so much to look at and I love your little girls matter-of-a-fact expression that daddy's taking my picture again, but this juice is just so good..and I've no time to pose. I love her diaphanous dress that shimmers and her little veil full of flowers; today she is a princess, albeit a slightly disheveled one. How adorable. Your mom seems resigned to yet another photo, but knows her son, and one day her granddaughter, will look at this picture and remember this day, when she turned 5!

Happy Birthday, little girl! :)

Jarmo,

Thank you for including us in your personal thoughts about your family. Apt for the autumn of her life, the picture is embedded in saffron/amber/sienna!

Reminds me of of Maggie's cyan hue for her recent work. Still, I wondered to what extent any color at all was needed to feel the moments the three of you had to together.

Thank you both, Maggie and Asher! This picture certainly is precious and will become even more so as time passes. I know a lot of people wouldn't like the cluttered "surroundings" of the two in this picture. To me they are essential signs of life. They make this picture just as much as the actual subjects.

Asher, thanks for the edit. I'm still a bit hesitant about what my preference here is, colour or bw.

Thank you so much for your kind comments, Fahim! Always a pleasure to read your posts.

Here's one more. Instead of the usual portrait session she insisted on being photographed when "playing the dog". What was I to oppose? This time in BW for Asher ;-).

Jarmo,

What a lucky parent! This child is a natural model and so cute! What a joy. Enjoy and spend as much time as you can with stories, walks and the zoo!

How adorable she is. Her dress makes her looks like a Flamenco dancer. Beautiful tones in this image!

What a great collection of memories you are making Jarmo !

I sincerely hope you do have others. In the future Laura - now 5 - will remember theses moments.

I am making a similar collection (shall I call it project ? :) ) of photos of my grandson who lives in CA.

I do like the photo of your adorable daughter ! :) but I also like the other one ! :)

Doug, Maggie, Antonio, thank you all for your kind comments! You're right, Antonio. Recording my life is the main purpose of my photography. I know one day my kids will be happy they spent the time posing for daddy :-D
