I had Rick's prior approval to tinker with his image a little. I straightened it but it still looks off. Any know why?

Because the picture were not shot stricktly perpendicular to the boat, the ship water line cannot be truly horizontal.
It's a perspective deformation, the "what you think should be horizontal" is in fact angled and therefore should be, in that case going slightly up.
Then the only way to strengthen this kind of shot is to trust your eyes.
Another factor is lens barreling…

The only help one has in this case, besides judging by eye and knowing that the water line cannot be level when shooting at an angle, are the verticals on the ship.
Very true, but in this precise case, the verticals are a bit short to straighten accurately!
Note also that this "issue" could also occur in a city landscape… or interior archi shots…
Perspective is an old art in itself!
