Hello everyone,

Thaks for letting join in onthis site, I hope that I can get back up to speed after a 15 year break. I was an avid and OK photographer during my highschool years, but life and family took me away from the hobby.

I have been serving in the US Army for the last 11 years with no end in sight, I really love my job!!! I have just recently returned from my 2nd tour in Iraq, and am currently stationed in Brussels, working for NATO.

I am bit of an "Old School" kinda guy, and just fell into an Olympus OM-1 with a 50mm and a 75-150mm lens. Also Have a Vivatar 285 Flash with a Quantum 1+ ( need an Euro charger for it) and a 2x converter. Along with that I have a Minolta Maxxxum si Plus with a Kodack 80-210mm and a Minolta 28-80. I really like all my 35mm equipment, but have been thinking about moving to a D/SLR, but don't have the money right now.

Well thanks for listining

Tim

Welcome Tim, My first thought is be safe! Thanks for serving.

That is one of the best and most complete system ever made for 35mm. The lenses still can compete with the best of Canon and Nikon. Only with the latest round of new Nikon lenses does anyone significantly move ahead of Olympus in the wide angle lenses (besides perhaps the much more expensive Leica and Contax with 15mm (both share the same design) and the Leica 19mm and the Contax 21mm). Olympus also boasted the unique ability to assess ambient light in their flash and many versions were rugged and protected against the weather. 10-15 years ago, Olympus was one of the coolest systems for any photographer especially pros. You just need to put film through it and have fun. Don't worry about the digital. Someone will give you their old digicam sooner or later. Those are cheap. Use that for snaps. Consider the Olympus OM-1 one of the finest 35 mm cameras ever made.

Again welcome and share you pictures. Do you have any from Belgium? I like the cobbled streets and old lace shops in Brusssels. Still more, I'd love to see what you have from Iraq! Get your buddies to post here too.
