Hello from Nice, France

Hello there. Just joined this forum so saying hello. Happened upon this forum by accident while googling about white balance.

I'm Scottish, currently living in the South of France. I use a Nikon D40 and, increasingly, manual focus primes. I'm interested in history and archaeology so tend to shoot those sort of subjects (in the field and in museums), also walk about street stuff, landscape ... a bit of macro (for example, old coins). I tend to like lower light, dusk (and dawn if I am up, which is seldom).

A couple of photos (nothing special, these are actually test shots while I got used to particular lenses:

My cat Gandalf considers whether to leap into my lap. Available (not much) light. Nikon D40, Nikkor-S.C 50mm f/1.4 @ ISO 400, 1/50s f/1.4

A window in the 'old town' area of Nice. I liked the rich colours and textures, the dilapidated feel ... Nikon D40, Micro-Nikkor 55m f/2.8 AI-S @ ISO 400, 1/250s, around f/4

Don't draw too much inference from both of these being 50-ish, I do use other focal lengths too :)

Welcome Chris,

We're glad you are here! A good start, although it's funny about the cat as we frowned apon "cat pictures" as the ubiquitous lens testing device replacing other efforts amongst lens hoarders. Now we even have a forum just for these and other pet photographs.

I must sat that the red light in the picture does add unique balance. If we could see the eyes and fur detail it would be a done deal!

I like 50mm perspective. It works fine for me and that's my most used focal length except with the Leica M8 which is 28mm.

We look forward to you getting to participate and get to know all the friendly folk here.

It's always helpful if you can give the purpose, context and intent behind a picture so we can focus comment biased to your own parameters, not just our own.

Asher
