Including the colour complementary green leaf and its elegantly rippled edge lifts this picture above the ordinary. Nice!

I'm not comfortable fiddling with others' images. I just wondered if it would put the emphasis on the lovely shapes. The colors are so vibrant it may cause one to overlook the more basic elements.

If it didn't do anything for you, that's the answer to my question.

I'll let you decide.

Hibiscus, a Monochromatic Study: Chris Calohan

Actually it's pretty impressive. Without the color one can appreciate the composition even more. It also would enhance the collection here. Although the picture is color has richness, poise and beauty, the elegance in B&W is especially enjoyable.

Didn't do anything for me in B&W and I am a real B&W kind of guy. Feel free to show me a different take.

Hi Chris,

I agree that in general flowers require them to be shot in color, they deserve it. The only possible exception, IMHO, is when the flower or parts of it, have a very appealing shape, or when the light is magical.

In this case I think color is more suitable although, with a bit of skill (and/or help from the proper tools, e.g. TopazLabs Black and White 2 plugin), a quad tone conversion can have it's own charm. Here's my take:

Bart, you captured what I imagined it might look like. Both color and B&W are lovely, but the B&W seems more complex, more seductive to me.

Curiosity got the best of me so I combined my original lighter version with the latter selenium toned darker version and came up with this...and I think I am starting a new love affair with this in the middle version.

Well done, Chris! We now have more representation of a fuller ranger of blacks and whites.

Now maybe look at what happens when you add some tiny fraction of that to the original color inasge!
