I finally downloaded some photos my 13-year-old took a couple of months ago. I was really taken by this one. I think it's got something (but I also realize that it is likely idiosyncratic to me in its appeal). Thought I'd share it with you.

In my mind, Asher. Freudian slip, I'm afraid. I was mentally comparing it to my early scenics and "Rachel's River." The kid is MUCH better than me!

Hi Rachel,

I'm pleased to see the young'ns work too. However, to get a better idea of what's going on in his mind and choices he makes, a series of pictures that he chooses might be helpful.

Ah, well, this was one of those happy accidents. He was using a point-and-shoot and the camera used a shutter speed too slow for the conditions. I really like the result, though. When I asked him what he was thinking, I got a typical 13-year-old reply: "I don't know." They say parents do survive the teen years.....and they also shoot horses, don't they? Seriously, he is an amazing kid.

However, he also shot this at the outing:

Hi Rachel,

Nurture that young lad, he has the beginnings of a great photographer!
Please convey my compliments to him, and thanks for sharing these with us!

Thank you, John. I told him and it pleased him enormously. His problem will be deciding which of his gifts to nurture. His oboe tutor (MFA in oboe) recently discovered he has "perfect pitch," and that combined with his talent, if he were willing to work he could become one of the nation's finest oboists. At 13, though, it's the "work" part that's the hangup!
