that it's been quiet around here lately! I've been very busy at work - feeding being more important than fun as David's arctic report makes clear! - but hopefully I'll put something up soon. Also, I've now replaced my old printer with an HP Z3100 and ran a couple of big 33inch by 22inch test prints. All I can say is that I am very very pleased with what the 1Ds3 can do at that print size. Plus I printed a couple of B&W film shots and the grayscale is also looking good.

Hi Mike,

I'd love to hear more about the likes - dislikes about the HP, perhaps in a different forum. I'm also interested to hear if/what you use as RIP.

I too would love to her an ongoing report on your printer. I'm going to get a large printer and am wondering whether to go epson or HP or even, Canon.

I will write up some more information on the HP in the next couple of weeks as I get used to it (Asher - would you object to a diary in the printer section?).

You are correct, I am amazed by the 1Ds3's total package. The files are astonishing and I find the camera handles much better than the 5D. Also (contrary to most internet rumour) all my lenses seem to perform better on the Ds3 than the 5D. I suspect this is, in part, due to more accurate autofocus and in the 85's case because it has a small microadjustment. The 5D remains excellent, and I still use it sometimes out of guilt, but a similar sized print from the 5D is clearly inferior in comparison (not saying they're awful, but obviously more coarsely drawn).

Perhaps bizarrely I'm also shooting with a film rangefinder in black and white and a ricoh GX100 - but I've not tried a 35mm film image above 18 by 12 yet.

I have the Canon iPF8100 and love it. It's fast, quiet and efficient.

I replaced an older Epson 9600 with the Canon and have no regrets. A couple of bonuses of the Canon is that the heads (2 of them) are user replaceable, it comes standard with a NIC(Network Interface card), it can take 700ml ink tanks, it can print 59 continuous feet without a RIP and the roll paper bottom loads.

The only downside I can think of is that it will not full bleed print on 44in wide material, full bleed print maxes out at 42in wide. It also requires different spools for 2in and 3in paper cores, which costs extra.

Mike and Jay we'd love diaries.

Just post as a thread and I'll move it to it's more important position. Look at the Diaries on MF by various posters! These are far more important than reviews as they are ongoing personal experience by photographers working with what they need to do.
