Juvenile Snail Kite (Female)

Short trip around Viera Wetlands this morning before a meeting worked out well for me! Located a Juvenile Female Snail Kite. I have never seen one here before, only in the Kissimmee Lakes!

As usual she didn't perform in the best of lighting conditions but I was stoked to get some Pic's!

Eric,

I especially like this one as there's the simple relationship to the gliding bird, wings outstretched and the flat pale sandy ground. Maybe it's about to land or it's just taken off? I wish there was even more of this stark but textured background.

What a great sighting, Eric! I've only rarely seen the adult, and never the juvenile. Nice work, with a respectable series of shots to document the event!

Asher - that looks like a water surface to me, with vegetation floating in it, and what looks like what might be a splash just below it (a fishing attempt)? I'm sure Eric will clarify all of this in his next post.

Don you are correct..it's water below. As i stated lighting was not in my favor but didn't really care since it was such a find. She was hovering looking for apple snails, its all they eat. They grab them with their feet from the water. I actually have a shot (not that good) of one chest deep in the water feeling the bottom of pond!

Thanks for the clarification Don and the new picture, Eric! This image is really so much more impressive to me with the shadow of the wings as added elements!
