You probably got bored just reading the title.
This was just a study of the afternoon light coming in through the back of the house but I am wondering about composition. Do you think the edge of the lamp on the left is too close to the frame? And what about the 'non-linear' bit of cloth in the upper right? Does that detract from the photo?

Hi Marcus...I'm not really qualified on the framing. But yes, some open space on the left and little less of the shade could open it up and bring in some context from the room.

This is just a personal style, but I would rather see it properly exposed for the lightest part of the shade and let in more blacks and shadows. This strikes me as a little overexposed, although the middle tones seem spot on for proper exposure.

Great that you are playing around with the camera and compositions, need to do more of that here!

Thank you for the comments. They are always welcome, for sure.
I will shoot this again with more space on the left and maybe the right part of the picture cropped out. I purposely didn't allow any of the room background in the photo because I am presenting the light shade as a 'thing-in-itself'. My histogram says the highlights are not overexposed but maybe there is a difference in our monitors. In any case, I will watch the exposure carefully when I shoot again. I like the lost shadows in a photograph like this. I'm a big fan of Ralph Gibson and the lighting here is somewhat his style.
