Less than ideal, but got a shot

Live band playing in a cramped uninteresting portable stage with deep contrast, as the musicians moved in and out of the sun and shadow. My vantage point was sitting on metal bleachers out a ways from the front of the stage.

I wasn’t going to bother taking any shots with the entertainers mostly in heavy shadow and overexposed parts of instruments or body parts, as wel as gear and bodies protruding out of each other when I pointed my long lens at them and tried to expose for them under the overhang. I focused on the singer who popped out of the shadow from time to time, knowing that at that moment the background would fall into blackness —— and tried to capture interesting body motions from her.

I liked this composition the best, and even though it ended up being slightly overexposed, that worked to the advantage when converting it to a black and white image. I only had one lens with me on my camera which was an 80-300mm equivalent in 35mm terms.

I transferred the file wirelessly to my iPad and processed the pic in Snapseed.

The B&W works well in present her as a soloist emerging from a dark bg.

Including the entire group in a darkened stage is a challenge. Snapseed doesn’t have a gradient shading function, unfortunately for those bright corners.

But that one lens still amazing!

Much smarter to carry than a Canon with its heavy long lenses!
