Rayleigh Scattering -“ the shorter blue and violet wavelengths in visible light are scattered sooner as they hit atmospheric particles when earth parks itself between the Sun and Moon... this leaves all the longer red wavelength light to reach the Moon surface and that's why it appears "red".
