Maya's Bird: Chris Calohan

Chris,

Maya has provided outstanding poetry for many years of her life and earned a reputation as one of the most important literary figures of America of the 20th Century.

Here verse takes us on a flight with a freed bird. This is also a metaphor for the freedom of the Africans who were captured by neighboring African tribes and brought to ports likePort Harcourt, on the South Eastern portion of the Nigerian coast line and then sold to Europeans, packed like firewood in the holds and decks of the slaving ships, then to the Americas.

Both as a poem about birds and one celebrating freedom, the verses are beautiful. You're picture, Chris makes a beautiful accompaniment to her work.
