New Hahnemuehle papers

Whilst I was visiting Focus on Imaging yesterday, I picked a sample pack of the new Bamboo and Baryta papers from Hahnemuehle. Most impressive, in fact I liked the Baryta so much that I grabbed 20 sheets of A3.

The Fine Art Baryta is a high gloss paper with a barium sulphate additive. The colour gamut is amazing. I've never seen paper quite as colourful off the HPB9180 using Hahnemuehle's canned profile. Its also pretty heavy at 325gsm.

The Bamboo on the other hand is more suited to warm toned colour and monochrome images and weighs in 290gsm. Its also made from 90% bamboo!

If you haven't tried them I'd thoroughly recommended doing so. Digital fine art paper is definitely starting to evolve.

John,

anyone know of what happens to the BaSO4 in time? Anyflaking or is it so well integrated with the fiber?

Asher,

The BaSO4 is added to the inkjet coating not the fibre. The PDF outlines most of the paper's characteristics but does not give a age.

Here's another take from Michael Reichman. He's hot on BasSo4!

Interesting review, obviously price and warm base colour helped Michael favour the Ilford paper and why not?

I've not tried the Ilford Baryta paper but do use their Gallerie range on my Epson 2100 with Lyson inks and these have profiled well with the affordable Colourvision/Datacolor printfix colourimeter. Although I've had less success with these papers on the HPB9180.

Personally I like the Hahnemuehle Baryta's texture, it looks expensive and it is, at £40 for 20 sheets of A3.

I also like the way the Hahnemuehle Baryta holds colour, perhaps its the optical brightener that gives it the edge, as Michael states the warm base of the Ilford suits monochrome.

Thanks Asher for pointing out MR's review, I believe his conclusions and parting comments echo most people's thoughts regarding the future of fine art papers. A good read!

Thanks John. I've used their Fine Art Pearl and it is very good and I was wondering when they would have a glossy available. I'll try that soon.
