Gregg,

There's something about the true colors of wood, leaves and earth that we naturally find appealing. There's a sense of honesty and lineage. Here the colors work well with the repeated forms of the boats. In the cropped picture, I longed for more water to the right. So I'm very pleased to experience your original framing. You might consider halving the distance from the dock on the right to the top of the picture so as to remove distraction. You might debate with yourself the value of a large identification line as it can distract, just make sure it's in the IPTC file.

This is an enjoyable picture.

I agree with Asher on trying "half the distance." A little more space would be good, but I'm with you on losing the dock.

I might also have a go at taming the highlight on the prow of the near boat just a bit.

An interesting thing happens when there's just a small amount of water above the top boat in this version of your picture. Reduce the distance above the boat further to 0.5 cm or even 0.25 cm on the screen. To me, at least, the front edge of the boat now cuts into the thin rim of water in an energetic defining manner.

Gregg, wooden boats are rare in the middle of the US, and I imagine they're not all that common in the UK. Aluminum, plastic, and fiberglass are now the materials of choice. With that in mind, I hope you have more opportunities to photograph these beautiful rowboats. I spent most of my childhood summers rowing a little wood boat in Lake Huron, and your photo evoked memories of the beautiful sounds of a wood boat in water.

You are right, they are now a rarity being replaced with plastic crap! Hopefully these will be here for many more years.

Much prefer the original crop, with long leading lines like in your image it makes sense to have a 'longer' crop. Seems to work better with it.

I think it boils down to personal preferences, I too like the 'longer' crop, I printed it out at A2+ it looks right! By the way it was shot on a certain 1Ds MkIII, very pleased with it. Thanks

I would crop a bit more on the right. The shadow of the pier and the loop of rope are distracting. Also, I would do something in term of color treatment. I'm not sure what but it feels like there's a little something to do that would push that picture to the next level. Otherwise, I love the composition and the light. Nice picture
