Not without my hat!

It was the Wednesday after Easter, after all, and etiquette dictates that the lady of style not set sail without a suitable hat. Never mind that the vessel involved was a 56-passenger submarine.

Here we see Carla about to board the submersible Atlantis X for a dive into the lagoon at Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, Hawai'i.

We descended to a depth (keel) of about 105 feet and rested briefly on the sandy bottom.

Canon EOS 40D, Sigma 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 OS at 24 mm, ISO 1600, f/22, 1/250 sec, fill from onboard flash.

Doug,

That's a wonderful hat and such a good idea for the sun and making the picture. Carla should be an advisor on hats to HRH Queen Elizabeth of England who wears often leaves the house wearing the most dull hats imaginable. Carla always has a better smile than 'Liz too!

Getting from a great snap to a wonderful and more print-worthy photograph!

Hi Doug,

Allow me to take advantage of your very happy and well-shot picture to say something to those who would like to know, about taking the picture further. One can look at the elements that make up the picture and ask if that part is shown best to do its work in making the picture as impressive as it can be.

Before printing the picture, the background to Carla might be worked with to advantage. It is perhaps, too light and flat. So one could move in the direction of that effect, just buying into it, or else making the boat and sky more dimensional but not as important as you special subject. For the sake of completeness for those who are not experienced with masking, I include succinct instructions

So, one might consider masking a duplicate blurred layer above this original layer and then painting Clara, in the large Photoshop image, (black, with the mask Icon selected), so she will reappear, sharp and in full glory. :)

I feel that it's worth looking at that or else going the opposite way and processing a layer with an S curve to make the ship "Pop!" a little and also slightly increase the sat. Carla of course will not need a thing, really as we like her as she is. So once again do the changes to the ship in a layer above the original and make a mask and select that icon in the layer and paint black over Carla in the large PS image so she reappears.

Let me know, anyone, if this is useful to you.

Asher

*To start, one drags a layer to be masked to the mask icon which is the second icon to the left at the bottom of the Layers palette. (That one gets from the Windows" drop down menu on the upper right of the Photoshop command bar.)

Some day I should start Photoshop and find out where all those things are.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Doug,

I believe you have reached such a commendable level in your own photography just in the past 3 months that I have had to pay more attention to your photographs as they deserve revisiting to enjoy more. When that happens, when the photograph gets some esthetic authority of other folk, then we are moving towards photography that's really worthy of nurturing.

What most folks don't realize that the masters not only saw well when they surveyed their subjects, but also worked well in the wet darkroom to MAKE that latent picture to a photograph to be treasured.

You do not see yourself as an artist, rather as an accomplished technical engineer and writer and admirer of one great lady in your life. I'm saying, Doug, your eyes have opened and now your working mind needs to get in line with that initial vision, to go further. I'm happy to be able to see this creative grasping of beauty to come alive in such an unexpected way.

When you are ready, we'll have phone PS to set you up!

Asher
