Off topic: Photography gives opportunities for community service

This is a really off-topic post, but I wanted to share with the forum an unexpected pleasure photography has given me: the community service I've been able to do.

I've shot a number of photos for a teacher writing the history of a local school. Some of the photos were used in a sesquicentennial celebration of the small town we live in. Even more fun was that prior to the display, I took groups of four third and fourth grade children around the school shooting photos. I put point-and-shoots in their hands and told them to shoot whatever caught their eye. They had fun and so did I.

More recently, I've been asked to shoot portraits of new board members of the local community area foundation (same one that hosts my art scholarship fund). They liked the results well enough they've approached me about new photos of the entire board.

I've talked to the counselor at the local continuation school about doing senior portraits of a few students in exchange for their performing a few hours of community service. A lot of these kids come from economically disadvantaged families and their senior portraits are often shot with a point-and-shoot by the school counselor.

I never expected to engage in something like this, but it has enriched my life a great deal. OPF has been instrumental in getting me to a point where I can produce something good enough to do these things. So, to all who have given of their time and expertise and helped me learn, I wanted to say thank you.

Rewards

Rachel,

I too have used my skills and time for several organizations. It's very rewarding when you have finished and see the good work done by the charity - and it can change lives - those of the people who work at the charity, those who receive and for me, that warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you've helped do something that has impacted others really makes a difference.

One of the charity events I did a couple years ago got so much press and publicity that 200 pets got homes in one day; Another had too many people voulenteer in one weekend but an entire home was built at the animal shelter that allowed the homeless dogs to have housebreaking training before being re-homed - a reason many dogs to to the shelter to begin with;

There are many other scenarios in which good comes from our photography that is priceless. I am about to embark on a huge public work project that I can't yet talk about that will consume the next year of my photographic life. And I can say, that I know Asher totally supports doing charitible photography himself. I know one of the OPF members goes up to camp each year working with sick kids - just to snap a few.

I get volunteered to shoot many events at Whitney High School in Cerritos, CA. This week alone I shot the Talent Show dress rehearsal on Tuesday, soccer on Wednesday and soccer again this Friday.

Additionally, every Wednesday, I tutor the newspaper photogs on photo journalism and I have "donated" my old 20D for their use.

(I also write many of the scholarship letters of recommendations. The school had 29 National Merit Semi-Finalists this year.)

Rachel, Kathy, Gary,

Well this is perfectly "on topic", giving back to the community. After all we take pictures of other folk all year. The most famous photo photographers were often apprenticed to established photographers who shared their skills.

Good work, everyone!

It's wonderful, isn't it? I am happy to hear what others are getting out of it as well. I have a feeling we're a pretty outwardly focused group (we see and care for others) as a whole.

I've done a few things for my daughter's school ranging from quick pics of the children in santa's grotto at Christmas to a calendar featuring the whole school grouped by birthday - I thoroughly enjoyed organising that one:)

I'd actually like to do some more general work, so hopefully someday..
