Wonderful architecture and colors Fahim. Was this at dusk? It seems that there is another tall building behind you. The UAE is full of them nowadays from what I gather.

Yes, Dubai is a marvel of a city. New, New, New but rooted in thousands of years of culture and traditions.

A wonderful mix indeed.

Thanks Cem.

The Old..The spice souk..

The new..well you know what this is.. The biggest shopping mall in the world. More tourists visited this place than Times Square or Buckingham palace last year. The Dubai Mall.

p2106359949-4.jpg

Here I am waiting for a musical performance by ( ? ) the world's most advanced fountain choreographed to music. I got it on a movie...packed with hundreds of tourists. And what a show the fountain gave us!!

Want to go from Tunisia to China. It costs about 1.5$!!

p2137078555-5.jpg

At the Ibn Battuta Mall, of course. The Mall is dedicated to the greatest traveler of ancient times.

Each section is themed. The architecture is huge and reflects the region.

A treasure trove for kids and those that want to know more about the inventions that form the basis of the modern world.

And there are maps, journeys, manuscripts of the famous traveler.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi..

Wikipedia has some information about it.

Stunning, barely begins to describe it. The attention to detail is immense; and often missed by most.
For example..the main pillars supporting the domes are huge. How does one construct such pillars without joints showing? Immaculate craftsmanship and time consuming attention to the minute details.

What about the chandeliers? Imported from Germany with millions of crystals by guess who?

And the list goes on.

' Invoke MY Names ' says the Lord. Allah is just one of them. The calligraphy is second to none and represents different forms of Arabic calligraphy. Each ' Name ' ( ' Attribute ' ) is surrounded by white gold.
With designs made of the mother of pearl..

Stunning architecture from international architects.

Here is something that is interesting ( fo me at least ). The designs shown here of the various structures require some understanding of the Writings found in the Holy Koran. Wiki falls short in this respect.

Fibre optics have been used in the centre piece ( the white wavy lines ). The stand next to central piece has been cut from one solid block of a tree trunk.

' Allah ' is one of the Names of the Lord in Islam. There are others. The have been engraved in the centre piece. Each Name ( Attribute ) is surrounded by white gold.

This one we call in Turkish Usturlab. I suspect it is of Arabic origin. Is Usturlâb
tأُصْطُرْلاَبٌ
the original word for it?

Cem, first my thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I honestly do not know the answer to your question.
I shall check and let you know, once I am back home.

' What are you photographing now ? , asked Ayesha.

' the dustbin ', I said and clicked.

Of course, the hotel I am staying in has an Egyptian theme..

Even the note paper..

What is there to photograph?, she asked.

Cem, sorry for being late.

Correct, it is an Arabic word. As you have mentioned.

Kindest regards.

Fahim,

This rich work appears carries so much imagination and devotion, combining tradition with modern expression. I wish it could be seen without other structures in the same frame.

Can you show some detail as we can see how the elements work together around one of the names.

Precious and semiprecious stones, marble, ceramics are used in the designs.

The German Chandeliers contain millions of crystals made to order by Swarovski .

The calligraphy consists of 3 main Arabic scripts.

The architecture draws from most Islamic countries including the design of the Taj Mahal.

Stained glass is found throughout the mosque.

I approached the door softly.

What might lie behind it? Should I open it? Should I just go back?

I pushed it gently. It creaked. A sudden cloud of dust and a strong smell..smell for having been closed for thousands of years engulfed me.

p1987838149-5.jpg

I made my way gently inside. Ra, Osiris, Sirius..names I had heard..I felt afraid.

Then whispering and incense. I was now on my hands and knees; crawling through the small passage.
Time..what is time but a passage..I crawled further.

It was dark. Some light. The voices were more pronounced.

Come from the dark and step into the the light, said the god priest...

I should have stayed with Ayesha, I thought.
