Peli Case - Your views needed

I'm considering getting a Peli case and have looked at their 1510 and 1560 products.

The 1510 is sized for airline carry on, while the 1560 is a few inches larger.

I'd like to keep all my gear in one case and use it in the boot of the car when out and about, subsequently transferring what I need into a smaller Lowepro bag.

The 1510 is possibly too small for all my gear, yet the airline carry on sizing is tempting.

I'm off to the Masai Mara next year and really believe that a hard case is the only option but I don't want end up losing it in baggage reclaim.

Has anyone tried getting the larger peli cases onto aircraft as hand luggage?

I don't know about the Pelicans and airplanes but I suggest you also look at the Hardigg Stormcases. The latches are much nicer than those on the Pelicans and the rest of the construction is at least comparable.

Sorry I can comment on airline portability (jet) but I do have a 1510 (in bland beige).

So far build quality has been realy convincing but I will comment in a year or so. I have found the dividers that came standard with the 1510 not very practical. The divider in the middle is one unit from bottom to top and offers little flexibility. If you carry a longer lens and some odd bits it fills up quite fast - so be certain to test if all your gear fits. Ofcourse packing it for travel it can hold quite some more then packing for easy access and day-to-day use. Protection of your gear is top notch and it is very practical.

(edit: there are some solid metal slots for locks that offer a bit of security ..)

Travel Weight

You may want to check on the weight limits into the camp if you will be flying in. Most of the small planes limit your weight in and it includes clothes, and gear. Friends just went and were limited to 40lbs.

Many thanks for your replies,

I'm inclined to go for the larger case (and check it in as baggage, a) due to weight restrictions on smaller carriers (as Kath points out) and b) I can get all my gear in it.

I'll also look at the Hardigg storm cases, they seem to be comparable and evenly priced with Peli.

Martin, I'm interested to note that you think the dividers are less than ideal, maybe I should consider foam and custom cut it. That really does drive the price down.

Thanks again!
