This is not about composition but the wonders of post processing.

Hi Doug,

I just find it really amazing with how little effort one can do some 'emergency surgery' on a shot that not so long ago would have ended in the trash.

Yes, I discover that everyday...
When we decided to move in here, I've done that big spring cleaning on my negs that I haven't had the time to scan (have to sell my scanner as well) It ended up with taking big scissors and with that blast of rage (can't you hear the "walkiries" on the back?) cutting the sheets of negatives and burn them in the garden.... Bad option. I would have save much more if I knew what I could do with ACR and noise reduction and all these light masks in Photoshop....

Sad!

Always act when blind rage has burnt itself out or your best gets consumed too!

Asher

But why in this thread? Was it supposed to be elsewhere as it seems off topic or perhaps I'm missing something.

:)

I can move it for you if necessary. It's an important topic, destroying one's work!

Asher

No no, it was just a thought about the fact that we never know how the technologies will assure a work to "live" whenever we though it was about to die. I assume you can do the same parallel with medicine, keeping people alive the longer possible in order to allow the technology to come to save them later. Georg made an image that he considered "standard", and transformed it in something he likes much by the use of his skills in HDR, things that he would not have considered before computer PP. Maybe he would have done like me? Burn the neg...

PS: My second name is "off-topic" :)

Then again.... you still have your 'neuro-chromix' copies :) and no one will take them away, except, God forbid.... Alzheimers. I can remember scenes from my long stay on the Maldives so vivid, you could print them, if only I had Ethernet somewhere behind my scalp, or what's left of it. LOL

Hmmm on a second thought, this would open up fascinating possibilities, printing stills from dreams. ;)

Georg,

I absolutely agree with your sentiment. I very much enjoyed my darkroom days, but the creativity of post-processing is unparalleled and keeps getting better.

I've heard many photographers bemoan post-processing, but I find it every bit as enjoyable as taking the photographs. Plus, many of those old photos that I loved but could never quite bring to their full potential have been rejuvenated over the past few years.

Very nice ocean shots, but I have to admit that the last one, while clearly the best photograph, is approaching that over-processed HDR look.

Sometimes I like that look btw. but only on occasion!

Hi Georg,

I went back and took another look at your last image. To my eye, the ridge of red rocks (lower left of center) is the area that causes me concern. The lighting there, being the brightest part of the foreground, doesn't match with obvious position of the sun.

Of course, you could just claim you were using reflectors or fill flash. :)

Still a lovely shot.

Joe

Yeah, just doing some test shots to try some long exposure HDR. I was also wrong not to use the lens hood I guess.

It amazes me what you can get out of a single exposure.
