Nice capture, Jamie. The scales are beautiful. I sold my Canon 500 f/4 IS years ago, but recall that an extension tube would reduce minimum focus distance to less than ten feet or so. Was your snake in a controlled environment, or out in the wild?
 
Beauty, Jaime. The eye and tongue make the image stand out. I might prefer a bit more depth of field in this particular image, given the importance of the rattle to its name and its prominence in the shot, but it might have been too far from the eye to allow this.

We have a den near home (80 miles - this is Montana), we traveled there yesterday and saw several snakes. We carry thongs in case of problems.

But it is a wild snake - we actually saw many snakes..

They get a bad rap - they would do almost anything to not have to strike.

It is interesting though - after a strike, they get reall lazy and don't seem to want to move much..
