Screens

One of the themes that I'm exploring is liminal space--the thin space between the physical and spiritual dimensions. I've been working with screens and separation with that.

Here's an example.

Hi, Doug,

That's quite nice.

I'm quite attracted by your concept of liminal space.

Welcome!

Hi Doug,
Welcome aboard and glad to see you here.
I, too am intrigued by your liminal space concept - would love to see some more on that theme. How about popping over to the "Introduce Yourself" forum and tell us a bit about yourself...don't be shy now!

this is very very nice! I to am interested in your concept- I find that in my work with the camera and humans I always look for the spirit inside-
is this a transparency overlay? It's a good one! I do these from time to time- My Fairy Children or some say Flower Children" Hope to see more of your work
the color/ps is sublime-

Thanks for the comments

In answer to several questions on this and similar shots, it is not an overlay or a "negative sandwich", but actually shot in camera. Basic set up is a black background seamless, model, screen made from a piece of black lace hung between two lightstands with clips to keep it unwrinkled, and a softbox or two camera left or right, or left and right, and maybe a boom light. The softboxes are almost equal to the screen plane, but angled more toward the model. You need a very very slight spill onto the front of the screen, but not much. I first attempted this with film and it was hit and miss on the light placement. With digital it is much easier (as I recall this photo is from one of the film scans).

really interesting... i like the old fashion look here... do you have more? I would like to see something more than the expressed index. I mean, more metaphoric. I like the concept, but it was expressed a bit weak. Without reading the comments seems looks like a nude woman behind a curtain with tasty shades. It also looks like some conceptual photo from the 60's because the composition. It seem you want to say somehting with this image, but there are some gaps in the message. It looks quite cold... Like a dead body and the curtain fits perfect for that. Meaning that death is the most pure state of human soul, I should agree.

Leonardo,

Maybe think of it in terms of a metaphorical confession in which perhaps even the material of the window of the confessional that supposed to separate the carnal feelings from each side, is confessing itself.
